When you are first starting out in the industry - going to openings and events etc how do you start up conversation? It's so awkward going to things when you don't know anyone personally (but may know of them) any tips for beginners?!
Isaac answered this here, but then again, Isaac is a pretty outgoing person. He will talk to literally anybody. I, on the other hand, spent most of my youth mute or shy as hell at best (all my school report cards said I needed to speak up), so I understand where you’re coming from.
For months I would go to these events and not say anything to anyone, but then I got used to it/was forced to socialise. To be honest, even now I spend an inappropriate amount of time hiding in the corner at these things. It’s much easier if you bring a friend. It doesn’t happen too often, but if people approach me telling me they know me, I’m not bothered by it at all so I can’t imagine that anyone else would be either. And if they are, they’re not worth it.
Be polite and friendly. Feign confidence. Fake it ‘til you make it. Carry a drink if need be, so you have something to do if you feel awkward. Depending on your event, have some relevant questions to ask. A simple ‘I love your shoes, where did you get them?’ can go a long way.
And if I’m around, try all of this out on me.
