how influential do you think tumblr is to your kind of work?
Tumblr is a weird one. I feel like it’s this kind of bubble, like, you can have a gazillion followers and be ‘Tumblr famous’ but only within Tumblr. I know a girl in New Zealand who has tens and tens and tens of thousands of Tumblr followers. She got flown to New York Fashion Week by Tumblr to cover it, yet has trouble getting seats at shows at New Zealand Fashion Week.
I think Americans use Tumblr a lot more than us in the Southern Hemisphere. Example: More Americans know of my Tumblr than my actual blog. They barely know that katherineisawesome.com exists. In New Zealand/Australia, it’s the other way around.
I’m probably not a good Tumblr user because I very rarely, if ever, reblog, and I hardly follow anyone. I just put up pictures I’ve taken and answer questions (ie. it’s largely original content).
In short I would never use it as my main blogging platform, and in terms of influence, I don’t think it changes much for me. It’s really my main blog that has given me most of the opportunites I’ve had. In saying that, I do quite like using it. It’s fun and easy to use, great for inspiration and I’ve met some amazing people through it - it’s nice being in the bubble sometimes.
